Who are we?
Volvo Cars is a company on a mission; to bring traditional car manufacturing into a connected, sustainable and smart future.
Let´s introduce ourselves - Battery Cell Design Group
Volvo Cars is leading the transformation towards a sustainable future with a series of new, electrified vehicles across a range of platforms. By 2030, we aim to be leading in electrification and sustainability; with a goal of half of all Volvo cars sold being fully electric. To deliver upon this vision, we need to master cell technology to fully understand how the battery cell design and materials influence the cell attributes' performance, safety, durability, sustainability, quality, and cost.
What you`ll do
You will work within the battery cell design group, alongside a dynamic, international team with a broad range of experts. You will be part of a stimulating and creative workplace ensuring excellent battery cell solutions for Volvo’s next-generation sustainable cars.
You will have a technical leading role in an industry undergoing exciting transformations. Your contributions will influence both Volvo Cars and the broader environmental landscape.
As a part of your role at Volvo Cars, your responsibilities will cover:
Leading Cell Technical Development: Leading the development of cutting-edge battery cell technology from initial concept to full-scale industrialization.
Drive Project Deliveries and Success: Take the lead on cell technical deliveries during crucial concept phases, ensuring alignment with Volvo's vision for sustainable mobility.
Coordinating Cell Sourcing: Collaborate with system architects and procurement teams to optimize our cell sourcing strategy, balancing cell design, attributes, and cost.
Define Cell Specification: Work closely with system and product teams to transform high-level vehicle requirements into precise cell specifications, bridging the gap between vehicle performance and battery technology.
Foster Supplier Partnerships: Build and maintain strong relationships with cell suppliers, guiding the design, evaluation, and validation processes to meet Volvo's standards.
Enable Next-Gen Software Integration: Function as a link between battery CAE and software teams, using your deep cell knowledge to support the development of advanced control algorithms and diagnostics for Volvo Cars’ software-defined vehicles.
Pioneer Testing Methodologies: Design and implement innovative test methods and procedures at Volvo's state-of-the-art Battery Lab facilities, evaluating new cell chemistries, designs, and sub-system integrations.
Drive Continuous Improvement: Analyze test results and market trends to recommend enhancements to cell technology, ensuring Volvo remains at the forefront of electric vehicle innovation.
Cross-functional leadership: Collaborate across departments to ensure seamless integration of battery technology into Volvo's broader vehicle architecture.
What you`ll bring
We are looking for a collaborative team member, who shares our passion for evolving battery cell technologies, automotive engineering, and sustainability. Within this strategically important technology area, you can work independently, initiate improvements and prioritize tasks effectively to secure your project deliveries and investigations.
To thrive in this role, you will need to collaborate and coordinate teams across the Volvo Cars battery department and beyond. It is expected that you will develop your knowledge and skills in automotive engineering practices and processes, while at the same time, mentoring individuals, and teams on the relevant aspects of cell technology and development. You are an effective communicator of complex technical concepts towards external and internal stakeholders, and you are committed to ethical and sustainable practices with our suppliers.
For us, it is important that you are eager to share knowledge and ideas on cell technology to ensure we are leading the sustainable energy transformation.
To fulfil your responsibilities at Volvo Cars, we believe that your background includes the following:
- MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related fields.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in battery cell development preferably with a cell producer or automotive OEM.
- Deep understanding of electrochemical properties, and characterization techniques (ex. EIS, ICA, CV, GITT)
- Experience of modern cell design principles, cell components and their interactions within the cell.
- Comprehensive knowledge of battery cell development trends and an ability to perform cell technology analyses.
