Machine Learning on Field Test Data

Dataingenjör
Läs mer Sep 21
Thesis background

Volvo Penta has a vested interest in utilizing and understanding vast amounts of data. As Martin Lundstedt (Volvo Group President and CEO) recounts, “It’s important to have good data management and ownership [of data], because then on top, you can create a lot of smart solutions.”
To that end, we at Volvo Penta Field Test (VPFT) have applied data engineering principles to build a large-scale data lake. This has enabled us to create a data-driven and cloud-native workflow for advanced analytics using Microsoft Azure and Databricks. Along with our data-driven workflow, data engineering and analytics have enabled us to reach valuable strategic conclusions and optimizations.
During this endeavor, technologies such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), evolutionary algorithms, semantic segmentation, and various clustering techniques have become core components of our current workspace. The most recent thesis project at VPFT created a deep learning process for detection and semantic segmentation of engine drive cycles.
We at VPFT are now committed to taking the next step in our machine learning journey.

Thesis Scope of Work

Our purpose with this thesis is to study real world engine usage data to further our understanding of engine behavior and applications. Thanks to the wealth of data collected by VPFT, we see multiple different possible projects. We will here present the outline for a possible project, but welcome applicants to come with their own ideas and suggestions.
Our suggested approach is to cluster engines based on logged data. A project is currently ongoing at Penta to cluster engines based on aggregated data from production engines. This thesis would complement that project by also investigating the possibilities of clustering on data from Field Tests, where we have more data for each engine. This thesis could then focus in on identifying better signals to use for clustering, detecting engines that are outliers in their behavior, or predicting errors using fault code data.
If this type of project sounds interesting, we would like to have a meeting with you where we can further discuss your thesis. As stated, we are also open to other avenues of investigation that you may be thinking of.

Let us give you some background information
The start-stop scenarios of self-driving vehicles have shown control challenges. Most tire models for systems simulation use point-follower contact mechanics and the concept of slip over the entire range of the performance envelope. Published proposals on the notion of relaxation are to support start-stop have implausible dynamic behavior at and around stand-still. Non-physical additions to those models are to ensure simulation stability.
Recent publications have made advances in tire mechanics to address the relaxation problem. The notion of partial differential equations ending up in so called transport equations is deemed to clarify transient tire behavior at or near stand-still.

What about Volvo Autonomous Solutions?
At Volvo Autonomous Solutions, we are passionate about the positive impact autonomous solutions will have on our society. We are on a journey to create something unique, developing cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions that will change the future of transportation. Master Thesis - IT-PEM Fuel Cell Vehicle Simulation Study

Produktutvecklare
Läs mer Sep 26
Transport solutions are a vital part of modern life as we know it. Sustainable transport solutions with low emissions will have increasing importance in the future.

The increased environmental and legislative demands is a great driver for new technology for heavy-duty vehicles. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV’s) are currently being developed at Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT) to meet the demands of the future.

The FC (Fuel cell) in a FCEV is interacting and impacting multiple subsystems in the vehicle, for example the cooling system, hydrogen storage system, air supply system and battery storage system. This project will investigate how a heavy-duty FCEV is affected on a system level if an intermediate temperature PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) FC is used instead of a low temperature PEM FC. This increase in FC operation temperature could allow for higher FC performance, improved overall system level performance, and increase the usability of the waste heat. A part of the work will also be to evaluate how other vehicles subsystems are affected when an intermediate temperature PEM FC is used instead of a low temperature PEM FC.

Suitable background
The project is suitable for 1 or 2 students with the ability to drive the work forward by being proactive, curious, and persistent. Suitable Background is a Master program in relevant engineering field. Extensive studies and high interest in mathematical modelling and simulations with previous experience from using Matlab or a similar simulation tool will be required.

Description of thesis work
The project will be performed in collaboration with Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT). The initial focus of the project will be to develop a physical Fuel Cell simulation model and calibrate this with experimental data from ongoing research projects. A second focus of the project is to integrate the Fuel Cell model in a complete vehicle simulation environment and perform a system study for Heavy-Duty vehicle applications. The examination will be done through Chalmers University of Technology.
