Fluidborne noise characterization of a hydraulic pump

The commercial vehicle industry is shifting from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to EDU (Electric Driving Units) as a propulsion mean, resulting in lower noise emission in society and a quieter environment for the driver. However, without the noise masking effect from the ICE, requirements on using silent components like hydraulic pumps for PTO (Power Take off) and Steering are becoming stricter. Pump noise can occur due to pressure pulsations travelling in the oil when the pump is a work. The pressure pulsations will induce structureborne and eventually airborne noise.
A hydraulic pump can be characterized by its source impedance and source strength, which are both inherent properties. This means that under a given operating condition (rpm, pressure drop and temperature), source impedance and source strength are independent on the system into which the pump is installed.
In this master’s thesis, we aim at performing measurement on a test bench in order to derive source impedance and source strength, by following ISO standard 10767. One goal of the thesis is to provide the derived source impedance and source strength as input data to a CAE model of a hydraulic system and assess the agreement between measurements and simulation.

Thesis: Process for deriving and optimizing vehicle dynamics models

Fordonsingenjör
Läs mer Aug 15
Background of thesis project

The future of vehicle automation heavily relies on vehicle simulations for the upbringing of different autonomous applications, whether it is related to path planning, motion planning or control. The development of any such functionality depends on the continuous regression testing of the system. The backbone of vehicle simulations is a vehicle model upon which the application is tested. Since the development happens at different stages, there are different requirements on vehicle models which lead to different vehicle model fidelities. High fidelity models are generally used for off-line simulations and in fast computing rigs where the high-fidelity model represents possible dynamics and physics of a real vehicle. High fidelity models are validated against measured data and used as a reference for validation of simpler, low fidelity models. Such lower fidelity models are superior regarding the computational cost but are rather application specific, hence more low fidelity models are needed to cover the necessary applications. In [1], a process for optimizing Modelica [2] models using a CasADi [3] framework and FMI standard [5] is proposed. The process links defining model applications to model optimization and validation. Such processes are important for the continuous validation of vehicle models within the vehicle modeling team, and important for growing the model garage provided by that team.

Structure-borne noise assessment of automotive components using the blocked force approach

The commercial vehicle industry is shifting from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to EDU (Electric Driving Units) as a propulsion mean, resulting in lower noise emission in society and a quieter environment for the driver. However, without the noise masking effect from the ICE, requirements on using silent components like pumps, compressors and fans is getting tougher especially when it comes to structure-borne noise. Therefore, an appropriate structure-borne noise characterization method is required both for target settings towards suppliers and as input data for simulations.
The blocked force approach aims at describing the structure-borne characteristics of components without any influence of the measurement boundary conditions. In other words, a component tested on different test benches should give the same blocked force. Another advantage of the blocked force approach is that is has recently been formalized as an ISO standard, SS ISO 20270.
In this master’s thesis, we aim at reviewing some fundamental concepts of the blocked force approach. In a first part, after some literature study, FEM (Finite Element Modelling) will be used to verify the various blocked force determination methods. From this study, guidelines should be drawn for the matrix inversion problem, the effect of noise in the measurements, the measurement point location strategy and structure properties. In a second part, measurements will be performed on a truck component to validate the findings from part one.

Master Thesis:Battery management system control and estimation design

Kontrollingenjör, elektronik
Läs mer Sep 22
An energy storage system (ESS) based on lithium-ion batteries is one of the most important but expensive and safety-critical components in the electrified powertrain. These batteries have complex nonlinear dynamics and need a battery management system (BMS) with advanced estimation and control algorithms to ensure their optimal performance and long lifetime. In this regard, the systems and control community have shown a lot of research interest in recent years. The overall goal is to develop a knowledgebase to design battery health conscious BMS for optimal utilization of currently available cells to guarantee their long lifetime. One of the core BMS functions is to estimate the battery’s internal state (state-of-charge [SOC], dynamic polarization, internal State-of-Temperature [SOT], etc.) and parameters (state-of-resistance [SOR], state-of-capacity [SOQ], etc.) using voltage, current, and temperature measurements. These estimates are used to provide critical predictions about maximum available battery energy and power (i.e., state-of-energy [SOE] and state-of-power [SOP]) during driving or charging. These predictions are then used to decide the maximum battery load to guarantee optimal, reliable, and safe operation (i.e., to respect voltage, current, and temperature limits)

Suitable background
Must have a strong educational background in electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science, or mechatronics with very good grades in master level courses like machine learning, reinforcement learning, nonlinear filtering/estimation, linear control systems, nonlinear and adaptive control systems, model predictive control, etc.
Must have high proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink.
You must be self-motivated and meticulous in your problem-solving approach.
Familiarity with electro-thermal dynamics of lithium-ion batteries and some experience with dSpace embedded control software development tools will be considered a merit

Please send your application including a CV, Cover Letter, and Transcript of grades.

Description of thesis work
A battery system in electric vehicles contains multiple cells connected in series or in parallel. These cells may exhibit different dynamic behaviours, due to electrochemical variances from the manufacturing process, locations of cells in a multi-cell system, and inevitable variations or imbalances in their internal parameters and operating conditions. The different dynamic behaviours lead to SOC and temperature imbalances among cells. The degree of imbalances over SOC and temperature is also affected by the different drive cycles and operating conditions. The cell imbalances are harmful to batteries’ energy and power utilization, and hence their lifetimes. To mitigate cell imbalance, one typical approach is to lower the energy of cells with a relatively high SOC to have the lowest SOC in a multi-cell system when the maximum SOC difference among all the cells is greater than a certain threshold. This method is simple, but not energy and power-optimal considering different drive cycles and operating conditions.

In this thesis, we will design a uniform approach to balance both SOC and temperature for different optimization objectives using reinforcement learning, considering measurement data (current, voltage, temperature), SOX, and drive cycle data. This thesis deals with a part of this puzzle with the scope confined to the following research tasks:
Topology analysis for passive and active cell balancing of series-connected and parallel-connected multi-cell systems for lithium-ion batteries. The characteristics of the degree of cell imbalance in SOC and temperature will be analysed.
Reinforcement learning problem formulation and solution for cell balancing. Define states, actions, and rewards of the Markov decision process in a drive cycle. An efficient decision-making policy should be drawn using a reinforcement learning method (such as Q-learning, temporal difference learning, or hybrid approaches).
Interpretability analysis of the proposed method regarding inputs, rewards, and decision-making. We will evaluate and visualize the proposed method for the specific multi-cell system from the user’s point of view.
Investigation of deployment methods for the proposed reinforcement learning solution in real applications. We will estimate and evaluate the performance of the newly learned agents in the target environment, namely, electric vehicles.
Simulation and verification of the proposed learning methods for real drive cycles and operating conditions. The numerical results should be compared with the performance of benchmark methods. The main purpose is to thoroughly evaluate the performance, potential benefits, and costs associated with the operation of the proposed approach.

Machine Learning Algorithms for BESS Energy Trading

Systemutvecklare/Programmerare
Läs mer Sep 15
Background
In a few years there will be a steady supply of used batteries from vehicles. The idea, on which this project proposal is based on, is to assemble such packs into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). When connected to the grid and can assist with services, for example act as backup power or support grid frequency balancing. A BESS supports energy cost management by charging when there is plenty of supply (low prices) and discharge when supply is limited (high prices). The price of energy varies over time. Historically the price has been lower at night, due to lower demand but this is now changing in markets with a high penetration of solar energy.

To maximize the financial and environmental benefits of this type of arbitrage, an intelligent energy trading algorithm is critical. The income for sold energy shall be higher than the cost of bought energy and battery degradation. An enticing, but somewhat naive, approach is to set up some simple rules such as "discharge the power plant with 100 kW if the electricity price exceeds 2 SEK/kWh". Using a set of rules like that is probably sub-optimal leading to low returns. Also, the parameters of the rules will be local with a need to be adapted for a particular market, city, region or country. Expensive engineering work required to make such an adaptation will limit the scalability of the solutions. An optimal and model-based energy management is therefore required.

Suitable background
Computer science, mathematics, energy systems, physics

Description of thesis work
This master thesis addresses the following questions:
How can machine learning, reinforcement learning in specific, be used for energy trading with a BESS?
If there are multiple adequate machine learning algorithms available to answer the above question, what are pros and cons between these candidates?

The student(s) will be provided with know how in the area and required mathematical models.
The thesis work will include various fields such as economics, artificial intelligence, simulation and optimization. Personal interest in machine learning, programming or renewable energy solutions is seen as benefit. This procedure involves phase transitions in the material, close to the surface, resulting in a martensite layer (hardened region) and a transition zone to the unhardened material at the core.
The hardening leads to an increase in hardness as well as compressive stresses at the hardened region, both of which results in an increased local fatigue strength. In the industry the induction process and subsequent quenching is in large based on experience and it has in general not been extensively simulated. It is of interest to correlate simulations with measurements to gain knowledge as well as estimating the properties of the hardened region for use in fatigue models.
The induction hardening is a multi-physics problem including electromagnetics, thermo-dynamics, structural mechanics and austenite decomposition (phase transitions). These can be simulated jointly using FEA software Comsol Multiphysics.

Your profile:
Knowledge in Finite Element Method / PDE is required and some knowledge related to structural mechanics, thermo-dynamics and metal phase transitions is preferred.
Knowledge in some scripting language, preferably Python and some object oriented language. Experience using Linux/bash is a plus.
Interest in solving problems and creating virtual models to mimic reality

The thesis project is intended for 2 students
The Master of Science Thesis work will be performed at Volvo Group Trucks Technology, (Gothenburg, Sweden)

Boat2grid - the boat battery as energy storage?

Fordonsingenjör
Läs mer Sep 19
Suitable background

Electro or engineering physics students who are interested in a sustainable transportation system and the future power grid in Sweden.

Description of thesis work

Electrification of transportation is happening in many areas and is also moving into Volvo Pentas marine business. Unfortunately, electric drivelines, especially the battery is expensive. One interesting concept is to use the vessels battery as energy storage towards the grid.
Many vessels, leisure and some commercial, are used only a few hours per year, or have long periods of limited use. Eg leisure vessels in Sweden spend up to 9 months on land and when in the water are used only 40-80 hrs. Today it is possible to make money by lending your battery to the grid, could this help electrify vessels?

Aim

Determine the feasibility and potential of boat batteries as a part of the Swedish power grid in a mature electrified vessel fleet.

First step

Define the mature system, eg 15-20 in the future. Make suitable assumptions about battery sizes, number of vessels and their locations.

Second step (details set in dialogue)

Look at B2G part of future grid as energy storage and simulate possible profit from vessel batteries through grid support
Also take needed geographical aspects into account, estimate battery charging impact on the local grid in harbor and simulate how bi-directional charging/B2G can decrease this impact

What do Florence Nightingale, Marco Polo, Amelia Earhart, and Sherlock Holmes all have in common?

They would all be a perfect candidate to join our team as System Test Engineer.

Florence, because of her lack of respect for the status quo and willingness to constantly challenge and improve the ways we are used to.
Marco, given his courage to explore the unknown.
Amelia’s uncompromising commitment and fearless decisiveness.
And Sherlock’s eye for details and passion to solve problems.

But in the end of the day, we are not looking for a super-human who checks all the boxes.

What really matters is that You, our new colleague, have the right personality, mindset and complements the team with new perspectives and knowledge.

Who are we?

The System Integration & Test is probably one of the loudest teams within the Volvo Group. It’s a brilliant indicator that we are having fun at work in an open-minded atmosphere.

We take great pride in our products, and we share a deep, genuine passion for Volvo and its customers and end-users.
Our passion motivates us to continuously walk the extra mile (which we are happy to do if it brings value to the products and its users).

With different backgrounds, experiences, personalities and characteristics, the team bears a strong resemblance to a Swiss army knife, and we are always looking for new components to increase our versatility.

Our not so humble ambition is to become the best automotive testers in the world, combining cutting-edge automated testing and mastering the beautiful art of manual exploratory testing.

And what do we do?

To be more precise and less Franz Kafka-ish: we manually integrate and test the software in system rigs and complete vehicles (aka Trucks).

We let machines do what they do best (repetitive testing), and we do what humans do best (creative test design) with high exploratory approach. And together with our friends around Volvo, we are part of developing the best transport solutions in the world. Period.

Who are you?
You are curious and willing to learn new things on daily basis.
You possess experience from vehicle testing and preferably know the end-users of heavy-duty trucks very well.
Your favorite movie is probably ‘Smokey and the Bandit’.

But foremost, you are an awesome human being. Because in the end of the day, we are in this together. Pushing and helping each other to grow and to become better testers.

But it is vital that you are self-propelled and thrive in environments that are constantly changing. Expect that we do not have the answers, but we will be happy to find out together with you.

What does it take?

Experience from technology/product development and product testing is necessary, but an honest passion and proven record for driving change in these domains is even more important.
Truck driver's license (C or CE) and knowledge about trucks.
Fluent in written and spoken English and preferably in Swedish.
Engineering degree or equivalent experience.

Interviews will run throughout the recruitment, so don’t wait to send in your application!

Läs mer Sep 12
Thesis Background
Electrification of road transport is a key element in delivering the Green Deal, for a carbon neutral Europe and ultimately a carbon neutral world. Using hydrogen as a carrier of green electricity to power electric trucks in long-haul operations is one important part of the puzzle, and a complement to battery electric vehicles and other renewable fuels.

At Volvo's Powertrain Strategic Development, we shape technology strategies and inform business decisions for new powertrain solutions. We probe emerging powertrain tech, legal shifts, and future societal needs to prepare a powertrain roadmap. In addition, we also develop technology solutions, to support the transition from concept to production. In this context, the analysis of logged vehicle data, both during the development phase and from in-production vehicles, stands as a cornerstone of our data-driven approach, offering insights into vehicle performance, user behavior, and potential areas for innovation.

A potential shift in data analytics from traditional coding to employing Generative AI, where one simply poses a prompt to articulate desired outcomes, would be a monumental leap forward. Embracing Generative AI not only streamlines processes but also democratizes data analysis, making it more accessible to non-technical users. This paradigm shift underscores the transformative power of Generative AI, fostering a more intuitive, efficient, and dynamic approach to extracting insights from vast datasets.

Master thesis :Optimal emission control using model predictive control

Fordonsingenjör
Läs mer Sep 25
Nytt
The combustion engine is a complex multivariable system which conventionally has been controlled with separate feed-forward and feedback. However, as it is challenging to incorporate the multivariable impact in by conventional approach and there is no supporting methodology for constraint handling, a more coordinated control method is desired. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an attractive method that can control multivariable systems and take constraints into account. It also is a flexible platform where optimization or constraints easily can be added or subtracted. To comply with the more stringent emissions regulation and improved fuel consumption on a combustion engine, the air charge and start of injection must be accurately controlled to ensure that the engine's outflow meets the aftertreatment system's needs. This work aims at calibrating the engine model and thereafter designing and implementing a nonlinear MPC to control EGR valve, intake throttle valve, waste gate and start of fuel injection.

Diagnostic Engineer

At Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE), we are driven by the idea that we will lead the way towards developing a world that is cleaner, smarter, and more connected, through talented employees, imagination, and technological innovation. With our mission “Building tomorrow together” as our guiding star, VCE is heading up a major technology shift. We have global presence, and we are passionate pioneers who walk the talk about bringing concrete sustainable solutions to the world today and for the generations to come.
Come, and be part where everything begins.

Our opportunities

We are now looking for a Diagnostic Engineer for our team at VCE in Eskilstuna. The work as diagnostic engineer includes development and documentation of strategies for fault-tracing and to test these on the machines. The information we produce is used in the aftermarket by service technicians at the dealers.

Who are you?

You are driving the improvement of fault-tracing support already during the design stage, by actively working and participating in projects that develop new technologies. Most of all work is done in collaboration with others within the company. Therefore, it is essential that you have good cooperative skills, an open and inclusive mindset, can give and take feedback and deliver according to the plans you make with your colleagues. Much of the work is to find relevant information and find out how the new system works. The work is largely theoretically oriented, more than practical. The practical aspects will mostly consist of verification of the machine's functions and the fault-tracing you have developed. We see that you have a long experience of similar work or Master's/Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Mechatronics or similar. Modern vehicle technology is familiar to you, and you have an interest in machinery and software features. You also find it to be a challenge to find information and to learn about new systems and new technologies.

Who are we?

As the new Diagnostic Engineer, you will be part of the department Diagnostic & Maintainability Engineering Wheel Loader and Core Technologies. We are the main function to produce information and tools used in the aftermarket for operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of products within Volvo Construction Equipment. We are involved in the development of new products together with R&D departments, not only in Sweden, but also internationally. You will occasionally be travelling within Sweden but also to your other colleagues who are located in Asia and Europe. You will be part of a dynamic team who is adapting to new ways of working and preparing for the future.
