Doctoral student in redefining defect composite acceptance

Doktorand
Läs mer Jul 3
Do you want to join an international team of expertise to support industry in better understanding which defects in fibre-reinforced composite structures that can be accepted without compromising quality or safety? We have an open position for a doctoral candidate within LEGEND – a European doctoral network developing increased understanding of, and computational tools for studying the effects of defects in composite structures.
About us
The Doctoral student position is placed at the Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering, which belongs to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. We foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute. Our activities integrate computational mechanics and advanced materials technology, combining multidisciplinary expertise to predict, understand, and elevate the performance of engineering materials and structures.

Within the project, you will also be connected to an international team of experts in the area of mechanics of composites through LEGEND – a Marie Sklodowska Curie Action doctoral network project. LEGEND, encompassing a collection of European research organisations and industries, will recruit 14 doctoral candidates, offering a lot of cross-over collaboration. For more information, please visit the LEGEND https://www.legend-msca-dn.com/.
About the research project?
This project focuses on redefining how defects are assessed in composite aerospace structures  - helping industry move beyond overly conservative repair or discard decisions. The Doctoral student will develop an advanced global–local modelling approach that captures how individual and interacting defects influence structural performance.
By combining high-fidelity simulations with experimental testing of lab-scale components, our research will generate new data, validate predictive models, and establish improved defect acceptance criteria. The outcome will be a practical, industry-ready methodology that enables safer, more cost-efficient decisions when dealing with defects in composite components.
The project will involve collaborations and secondments (in total 8 months during the first three years) at University of Kore (2 months) and Leonardo S.p.A. (6 months) in Italy.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Applied Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Computational Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics or similar.
Documented experience (education/courses or thesis project with high grades) in the finite element method and the mechanics of fibre-reinforced polymers.
Interest and high skills in programming and numerical methods
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

*for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.
We also expect that you are analytical, ambitious, independent, and a strong team player that thrives through collaboration.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
Documented knowledge (education/courses or thesis project) in computational homogenisation and/or computational micro/mesoscale modelling.

What you will do
Develop your scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research through written scientific publications and oral presentations at international conferences.
Collaborate with fellow doctoral candidates within the LEGEND project, utilising synergies between projects.
Actively participate in General Assembly meetings and doctoral training events within LEGEND, distributed across Europe.
Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Solid and Structural Mechanics.
Develop and implement a computational framework that links small-scale material defects to large-scale structural performance, enabling accurate prediction of how defects affect strength, stiffness, and fracture behaviour.
Teach on Chalmers' undergraduate level corresponding to 10 percent of working hours.

Contract terms

Renewable ocean energy is a vital component of the global transition towards fossil-free energy production and a key contributor to a sustainable future. Technologies such as floating offshore wind, wave energy converters, and floating photovoltaic systems are rapidly advancing and being deployed in offshore environments.
The project assistant will contribute to three ongoing research projects within the Division of Marine Technology. These projects are conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners specialising in the development of umbilical cables, mooring systems, and installation solutions for floating renewable energy devices.
Two of the projects focus on the structural integrity of highly dynamic power cables. A central challenge is to design cables that can withstand complex mechanical loading while ensuring reliable power transmission over extended service lifetimes, without the need for maintenance or replacement.
The third project centres on the development of an advanced lifetime engineering simulation framework, integrating lifecycle assessment (LCA), lifecycle cost (LCC), and lifecycle performance (LCP). As the LCP module is currently under development, the project assistant will play a key role in its completion. This work will include the modelling of fatigue behaviour of mooring systems for floating offshore wind applications, as well as extending the framework to incorporate power cable performance.
Who we are looking for

The following experience will strengthen your application:
It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last year prior to the application deadline.
Verified experience from leading projects and presenting at large international conferences.

What you will do
Carry out numerical simulations using SESAM software to analyse the fully coupled hydro-mechanical response of power cables under various sea states, installation conditions, and other parameters evaluated through scenario-based studies in collaboration with industry partners.
Perform thermo-mechanical assessments of power cables to quantify how structural integrity is influenced by different power transmission rates.
Enhance existing finite element models and conduct stress-based and fretting fatigue analyses, using cable motion characteristics obtained from SESAM simulations.
Complete the lifecycle performance (LCP) module within the lifetime engineering framework, with a primary focus on mooring systems for floating offshore wind. The framework will also be extended to include power cables. Input to the LCP module will be provided by partners in an EU-funded project. The module will be developed in MATLAB and integrated with the existing LCA and LCC components.
Prepare and submit at least one conference paper and one journal article.

Doctoral students in Nanoelectronic Memory Devices

Doktorand
Läs mer Jun 18
Do you want to explore the future of nanoelectronics and develop next-generation devices beyond the limits of silicon? Join Chalmers and contribute to cutting-edge research on two-dimensional semiconductors, focusing on advanced memory technologies in a world-class research environment.
About us
The https://www.chalmers.se/en/departments/mc2/ advances the frontiers in quantum technology, nanoscience, photonics and future electronic systems - for technical and societal development. Our cross-disciplinary approach gives interesting collaborations in academy, industry and society, and is a driving force for innovations, results and breakthroughs. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.
Under the supervision of Dr. Anton Persson, who recently joined from Stanford University, you will become part of the Division of Microwave Electronics which has doctoral students and senior researchers from both industry and academia working with semiconductor technology development, circuit design, and the realization of complete system demonstrations.
About the research project?
The continuous miniaturization of silicon-based electronics has driven the technological progress for decades. However, as devices now approach atomic scales, the fundamental laws of physics increasingly hinder further advances. To sustain the pace of innovation, both academia and industry have started exploring alternative materials, devices, and circuit architectures, particularly in the rapidly expanding field of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator hardware. Atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors have emerged as highly promising candidates to either significantly complement or even replace silicon in future electronics.

In this project, your doctoral research will focus on developing novel memory transistors based on TMDs that enable functionality beyond the limits of silicon. The project covers nanofabrication, semiconductor device physics, electrical and materials characterization as well as low-level system integration, benefiting from one of the largest cleanrooms in European academia and our uniquely well-equipped electrical characterization laboratory.

Doktorand
Läs mer Jun 18
Do you want to use advanced simulation methods to understand and improve the performance of fuel cells? Join Chalmers and contribute to atomistic modelling of catalytic reactions to enhance the stability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
About us
Chemical Physics develops sustainable energy systems by using heterogeneous (electro) catalysis for alternative fuel production, emission control, energy storage, and fuel cells. The research is interdisciplinary with strong connections between fundamental and applied science. Chemical Physics is a dynamic and international environment that strives for scientific excellence through teamwork and combined theoretical and experimental efforts. The theoretical activities at Chemical Physics focus on electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory together with mean-field modeling and Monte-Carlo simulations for reaction kinetics. By linking quantum mechanical calculations with kinetic modeling, it is possible to bridge both length and time scales.
About the research project
Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) convert the chemical energy in hydrogen to electrical energy. The main parts of a PEMFC are the anode, cathode and electrolyte. The reactions at the anode and cathode electrodes are catalyzed by metal nanoparticles on carbon. A current issue for large scale implementation of the PEMFC technology is long-term stability.
The project will use atomistic first principles methods to understand the governing mechanism for fuel cell degradation. Increased understanding of the governing processes will provide information on how catalysts could be improved and how the system should be operated to minimize degradation. The project is a collaboration between Volvo Technology AB and Chemical Physics at Chalmers.

Doctoral student in Advanced microscopy of Zr alloys for nuclear reactors

Doktorand
Läs mer Jun 18
Are you interested in advancing materials for safe and reliable nuclear power using cutting-edge characterization techniques? Join our team at Chalmers to explore corrosion mechanisms in zirconium alloys at the atomic scale and contribute to the development of next-generation nuclear materials.
About us
The research at the Division of Microstructure Physics focuses on experimental investigations of engineering materials using advanced characterization techniques. We mainly use electron microscopy, atom probe tomography (APT) and large scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron scattering). The research primarily deals with the relation between microstructure and properties, and how this relationship is influenced by processing and in-service degradation. Among the materials studied, steel, hard coatings, zirconium alloys and high entropy materials are central. The applications are often related to energy and sustainability.
About the research project?
Nuclear fuel is enclosed in cladding tubes made from zirconium alloys. To improve reactor safety and economic performance, new alloys are continuously being developed. In this project, the corrosion behaviour of a novel zirconium alloy will be investigated to improve our understanding of the underlying corrosion mechanisms and support the development of next-generation materials. Advanced characterization techniques, including electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, will be used to study corrosion processes at the atomic scale.
