The Volvo Penta Exhaust Aftertreatment System Design department are looking for a design engineer who are interested in working with development Exhaust Aftertreatment mufflers, urea distribution and system integration. You operate in all design stages within our marine and industrial applications. Who are you?

To be successful in the role as design engineer within the Exhaust Aftertreatment System team we believe that you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and relevant working experience within relevant technical areas such as aftertreatment system, internal combustion engines, and CAD design of complex technical parts. Sheet metal experience within design- or manufacturing engineering is a merit. We use CREO CAD & Creo view software as a daily working tool.

About the role

As the Solution Architect you will own the technical and architectural decisions for your product team, valuing simplicity and willing to challenge technical constraints and procedures to achieve robust and scalable solutions. You will be the visionary force behind the technical solutions and are responsible for planning and developing the architectural runway in collaboration with the Domain Architect. About us:

Engine Development and Field Testing within Product Development is responsible for testing and optimization of both Hardware and Software regarding performance, emission and durability of all our power units, both for Marine and Industrial applications. There are about 80 Engineers working in different projects. We are divided into four groups, Marine Development and Calibration, Industrial Development and Calibration, Field testing and data management and Electromobility Verification & Validation, Diagnostics and AECD.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

As calibration leader (CL) at Volvo Penta you are responsible for engine base calibration, engine calibration application or EATS calibration. Within your function area you will work cross all projects, both marine and industrial.

You will participate in planning by estimate time and resources for calibration activities to support Project Manager Verification (PMV) with Feature plan.

Together with Configuration Manager (CM), Project Manager Verification (PMV) and Powertrain Electronics department secure that important software releases are planned for all projects for all calibration deliveries. For example, Durability test, Field Test, Certification and Start of Production (SOP)?.

You will lead and work closely with calibration engineers. Supporting in their daily calibration work. Taking part of dataset reviews and follow up of dataset maturity.

You will be responsible to keep common strategies between the projects when possible.

As Calibration Leader you will also contribute with your calibration experience and knowledge to other functions within the organization e.g., Quality, Sales, Aftermarket, Powertrain Electronics and Certification.?

At Volvo Materials technology we provide Volvo Group with world-class knowledge within metallic materials. In total we are about 35 engineers and technical doctors within materials science and related subjects. Together with other engineers around the world, we work towards the goal of making the developing the next generation sustainable transport solutions.

Are you interested in Metal Additive Manufacturing? Are you passionate about metallic materials? Do you like hands-on laboratory work combined with a theoretical approach? Then this Master thesis is definitely for you!

Background and aim

Additive manufacturing has recently taken the step to go from being used as prototypes to also be used for e.g. small series production. This is enabled by the rapid development of the technique, but also by new materials that are better adapted for the automotive industry.

In this project we are studying how different post-processing steps of additively manufactured parts influences the mechanical properties and microstructure.


The purpose of the project is to assess the influence of post-processing on the properties and microstructure of AM-parts (steel). The parts are made by the SLM-technique (Selective Laser Melting) and are in ‘as-printed condition’ at this stage.

The thesis work will comprise of, among others:
Literature review
Conduct and/or analyse different post-processing operations
Take part in residual stress measurement
Conduct metallographic analyses (and some mechanical testing)

The project is a mix of theoretical and practical work, and you will be a part or a creative environment with skilled and experiences colleagues at our well-equipped materials technology lab in Gothenburg.

The student will be placed at Volvo Materials Technology in the Lundby area, Göteborg. Cooperation with university/institute is also encouraged.

Suitable background

We seek one student, preferably in Material Science, Mechanical engineering, or equal background. Analytical mindset, able to work hands on in the lab and ability to cooperate are prerequisites.

We think that you have a BSc or MSc degree in mechatronics/software engineering or equivalent, you are a strong communicator with great networking skills, you are solution focused, eager to learn new skills and driven by self-development.

You have good knowledge about ISO 26262 and it is a bonus if you have PCS related ISO standards. You have experience of analysing vulnerabilities and cyber threat intelligence. Earlier experience from within the Volvo Group and working with TEA2+ and bridge plan development will be advantage.

Main area of responsibility:

The team has members with a broad mix of competences to be able to efficiently address a wide spectrum of Chassis & Driveline issues. As a key member of the team, you will play an important role in the team’s success and your main responsibilities will be a wide range of activities.
You will work with Root Cause Analysis investigations based on customer complaints, the analysis could be purely data driven, performed at the production facility, in one of our buses, in the field or a combination depending on the need of each case. You will also develop solution concepts, be a part of planning and executing verification activities and give input to future requirements and test method development.
The role offers you a chance to broaden your competence inside Chassis & Driveline technology to be able to
contribute to a variety of areas outside your current core competence.

5+ years’ experience from the automotive industry in Product Development
Engineering degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering area.
Technical knowledge and experience related to components installation and media routing.
Fluent in English, both written and spoken
You are business oriented with a clear customer focus
Experience modeling 3D parts/system and detailing technical drawings, Catia V5 is preferable.
Have experience using Root Cause Analysis methods and/or FMEA

It is considered an asset if you:
Have a Solid knowledge of Volvo systems and processes
Knowledge in Agile principles and methods
Bus driving license
