PhD position in Hybrid Quantum Systems

Doktorand
Läs mer Sep 6
In the Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory, we will develop nanofabricated devices to create interfaces between cold atoms, light and motion. We will use these devices to create quantum states of mechanical motion. If you have a passion for highly collaborative, experimental research and want to learn advanced technical skills ranging from nanofabrication to atomic and optical physics, this is for you!

Project description
The Hybrid Quantum Systems Laboratory at Chalmers is a new laboratory at Chalmers that will exploit the exquisite control over light enabled by photonics. Nanofabrication of photonic integated circuits and mechanical oscillators with ultralow loss is at the heart of our research. Cold atoms are the third ingredient, and we will use the tools of atomic physics to cool and trap atoms and couple their quantum states to light and mechanical motion. By exploiting this interaction, we will probe quantum physics at the macroscopic scale. The systems we develop will be exquisite spin sensors, enabling applications in biosensing and material characterization.

Postdoc position in single molecule analysis with nanopores

Forskarassistent
Läs mer Sep 3
This is your chance to work in a strong research environment with an interdisciplinary research topic that is very active worldwide. An excellent chance to merit yourself for whatever future career you pursue!

Project description
Our group works with chemically modified nanostructures for various applications. We are interested in developing a new kind of platform for trapping single or very few biological molecules. This will open up new possibilities for analyzing biomolecules and their function, which may ultimately lead to a better understanding of life on the molecular level.

More specifically, we want to study the behavior of proteins. For instance, we believe that the methods we are developing can be used to gain new insights on oligomer formation among certain proteins that are associated with diseases such as neurodegenerative conditions (amyloid formation). By investigating how a very small number of molecules, confined in space to the nanoscale, interact with each other we may be able to understand better how and why toxic oligomers form.

We are also interested in using our technologies to study enzymes, which are nature's catalytic machines. Enzymes are very important for various applications in bioprocessing technology. A better understanding of how they operate, obtained by studying them one by one, can improve various areas of biotechnology and sensor devices.

Finally, the synthetic systems we are developing can be used to mimic biological processes, such as transport of proteins through the membrane surrounding the cell nucleus. By artificially reproducing such processes we can learn more about how the biological machinery works on the molecular level and construct biologically inspired devices in a "bottom up" manner.

As a postdoc, you would contribute to our work on the above topics, although your exact project is subject to discussion and new research directions may emerge. Our broad research field requires knowledge about advanced nanofabrication techniques, fluorescence microscopy and organic chemistry synthesis, among other things. (You are not expected to know everything when you start, but some topic relevance in your background is meriting.) You will work closely together with other PhD students and postdocs in the same research group.

To qualify as a postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree. Good recommendations from your previous supervisor are meriting. Similarly, good publications are meriting but not a formal requirement. The most important qualification is a true interest in science and a strong motivation to do research. Your thesis should ideally be from the fields of physics, chemistry or materials science. However, a PhD in other topics such as life science could also be a suitable background.

Note that the starting date is flexible.

Please check this webpage for further information about the research activities in the group: http://www.adahlin.com

As a successful candidate, you will be working in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment with a vibrant and supportive community of scholars with ongoing international collaborations, and you will have the intellectual freedom to develop your own perspective and innovative ideas within a cutting-edge field.

Project description
The push for open science means that scientific knowledge is increasingly disseminated both inside and outside academia: future scientists need the right tools to communicate with a broad and diverse audience. This requires advanced writing expertise and rhetorical flexibility, well beyond writing for academic purposes. Unfortunately, writing education at the graduate and post-graduate level seldom addresses this need: writing research has not investigated how to promote transfer of writing skills and the development of rhetorical flexibility in the training of future researchers.

For this postdoctoral position, we seek applicants who are interested in addressing this gap. We invite project proposals which use or develop established theories in writing research and educational sciences, and adopt an empirical focus with a rich methodological approach in the investigation of pedagogical practices and task development in writing.
Possible interesting areas of research include but are not limited to (1) research on genre pedagogy in academic settings with a focus on learning dynamics and/or teacher perspectives (2) research on writing transfer (3) research on pedagogical writing-task development, including multimodality, use of LLM/AI, and/or multilingual approaches, 4) research on science communication pedagogy. To address the proposed research questions, we welcome qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches, as long as the proposed approach is well described and justified, and demonstrates a focus on data richness.

An ongoing international collaboration and a pilot project on multi-genre pedagogy will provide the interested applicants with a strong and reliable support basis, but applicants will be able to develop their postdoctoral work according to their interests and skills, and are therefore encouraged to present creative projects.

Major responsibilities
As a postdoctoral scholar you are expected to be a highly active member of the Language and Communication division and in particular the research groups on Writing in Doctoral Education and Scientific/science Communication, and Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Depending on your research experience and research interests, you will have the possibility to supervise masters' students and be involved in teaching at the department (max 20% of your time). In addition, in collaboration with colleagues you will be expected to author publications and, potentially, seek external funding for research to enable the establishment of a future research platform involving your own as well as other's research.

Qualifications
The successful applicant has a Ph.D. degree in a field that is relevant to the research project described in their proposal/application (e.g. Educational Linguistics, Educational Psychology, Applied Linguistics, Education, Rhetoric and Composition, and/or STEM education with a focus on writing or communication).

The applicant must have:
• Knowledge of and experience in applying qualitative and/or quantitative research methods (to the extent that this is relevant to the proposed project).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• A publication record in respected journals/conferences relevant to the field of research.
• Excellent ability to collaborate with colleagues and external partners.

It is meritorious if the applicant has pedagogical experience in academic writing and/or genre pedagogy. Additional meritorious qualifications include:
• Experience working with students and/or teachers in close-to-practice educational research.
• Participation in international research networks within the research area.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Postdoc positions in giant atoms for quantum simulation or quantum communication

These postdoc positions are part of the 5-year project "Quantum simulation and communication with giant atoms" that began in 2023, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, with the aim of developing useful applications based on an exciting new paradigm in quantum optics: giant atoms. Giant atoms couple to light at multiple points, which gives rise to interference effects. The succesful candidates will, in theoretical studies using both analytical and numerical tools, harness these interference effects to either (i) control the interaction between giant atoms, which function as qubits, and their surroundings, to create quantum-simulation protocols for large molecules, or (ii) control emission of light from and absorption of light in the giant atoms functioning as qubits, to enable quantum communication and distributed quantum computing.

Project description
In quantum optics, it is common to assume that atoms can be approximated as point-like compared to the wavelength of the light they interact with. It is only in the past few years that experiments (at Chalmers, MIT, and other places), with artificial atoms built from superconducting circuits, have shown that this assumption can be violated. These artificial atoms can couple to an electromagnetic field at several points, which can be wavelengths apart. The study of giant atoms and the interference effects that arise from their coupling points is still in its infancy, but it is attracting increasing attention. In this project, we aim to go from fundamental research towards useful applications of giant atoms in emerging quantum technology.

The project is carried out in the stimulating research environment of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer.

The WACQT team at Chalmers currently has about 80 members (faculty, permanent research staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate students) and is expanding. WACQT is committed to promoting career development, diversity, and gender equality through networking and supporting activities.

Information about the department and the division
Our department (MC2) is host to the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanotechnology Laboratory cleanroom, the largest such facility in Northern Europe, and our measurement lab at QTL is well equipped with cryogenic and microwave electronic equipment. We are in a position to build and operate large-scale quantum processors!

At the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQPL), we work on theoretical aspects of future high-performance nano-electronic systems. Our research covers a broad spectrum, from fundamental problems to very applied ones. We work in close collaboration with experimental groups such as the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL), especially within WACQT. For the research on giant atoms, we also have a long-standing collaboration with the experimental group of Prof. William Oliver at MIT.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to develop protocols using giant atoms for either (i) quantum simulation of open systems or (ii) quantum communication and distributed quantum computing. This will include both analytical and numerical work, and also communication with experimentalists who can implement the protocols that are developed in this project. You may also help in supervising PhD students and/or master's students working on other uses of giant atoms for quantum technology.

Qualifications
Required qualifications:
*PhD in Physics or neighbouring fields (obtained before employment begins)
*Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
*Ability to program in high-level languages such as Python or C

Desired qualifications:
*Experience from working on quantum simulation, quantum communication, quantum chemistry, quantum optics, or quantum computing.

We value a collaborative attitude and an interest in working both in teams and independently. Self-motivation, attention to detail, and a problem-solving analytical ability are important personal qualities for this position.
