About the job
We are looking for a Data Engineer to join our data product team. At Avinode, we are still relatively early in our data journey. Over the past two years, the team has built a modern data platform with Databricks at the core, and now we are starting to reap the benefits of these efforts, supporting various parts of the company with their data needs. With the initial platform in place, we are ready to scale it up and shape data product offerings for internal customers in the organisation and eventually external customers as well.
As a Data Engineer, you will contribute to the technical foundations of the data platform. This role is similar to a software engineering position, focusing on developing and expanding the platform's capabilities and what data it can handle. The team you will be joining is comprised of people from 4 different countries, has a good gender balance, and takes inclusiveness and psychological safety very seriously.
What you will do
- Working with with your teammates, design appropriate technical solutions to implement new functionality and improve existing functionality in the data platform.
- Build additional integrations with our data platform.
- Troubleshoot issues with data pipelines.
- Assist product teams with data modelling.
- Produce high-quality, maintainable code, following the team’s standard coding practices and conventions.
- Use the team’s standard tools for source control, bug tracking, test automation, technical documentation, and so on.
Who you are
-You have 4+ years of experience in a data engineering or data-adjacent software engineering role in a cloud environment. We use Azure, but experience working in AWS or GCP is just fine.
- You are proficient with Python.
- You have expert-level proficiency with .
- You know your way around agile and lean/continuous software development. We tend to follow Kanban, but aren’t religious about it.
- You are an independent self-starter who isn’t afraid to ask questions.
- You communicate well. With offices in multiple time zones and multiple countries, this position requires strong written and verbal communication skills.
What do we offer you?
This role is a chance to drive change across the business aviation industry. That change won’t happen by accident. Business aviation generates mountains of data, but much of it remains underused. At Avinode, we’re working to change that. By turning raw data into actionable insights our customers can rely on to grow and optimize their operations. This role will help the industry turn its data into real impact.
We are passionate about our work and proud of our high engagement, creativity, and curious culture. But don't worry, we like to laugh and have fun.
We are a fully remote company. You decide where and how you work. We want you to love what you do, but we know we all need to live, so we provide a competitive salary and a set of benefits.
Want to join our crew?
Sounds like a great fit for you? You’ll find more fun facts about our Noders (that’s what we call ourselves) and our culture on our website.

"Founded in 1927, the Volvo Group is committed to driving prosperity and shaping the future landscape through sustainable transport, mobility, and infrastructure solutions. By offering trucks, buses, construction equipment, power solutions for marine and industrial applications, financing and services that increase our customers’ uptime and productivity.

Our headquarters are in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo Group shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm."

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Thesis Background

Volvo Penta has a vested interest in utilizing and understanding vast amounts of data. As Martin Lundstedt (Volvo Group President and CEO) recounts, “It’s important to have good data management and ownership [of data], because then on top, you can create a lot of smart solutions.”

To that end, we at Volvo Penta Data Science & Engineering (VPDS&E) have applied data engineering principles to build a large-scale data lake. This has enabled us to create a data-driven and cloud-native workflow for advanced analytics using Microsoft Azure and Databricks. Along with our data-driven workflow, data engineering and analytics have enabled us to reach valuable strategic conclusions and optimizations.

What you will do?

Our purpose with this thesis is to study real world engine usage data to further our understanding of engine behavior and applications. Thanks to the wealth of data collected by the field test department, we see multiple different projects. We will present the outline for a project, but welcome applicants to come with their own ideas and suggestions.

The thesis will focus on analyzing engine driving behavior by utilizing time series analysis techniques, including pattern recognition, on time-resolved engine signals. The main objective is to uncover the various driving patterns and behaviors demonstrated by our engine population.
Key questions to investigate include;
* What are the most common and unique driving patterns observed across one or more engines?
* What clusters can be identified within the extracted patterns?

From Volvo Penta’s perspective, this research represents a significant opportunity to enhance our products by developing more targeted tools that correlate specific driving patterns with various types of errors.

Qualifications for the Master Thesis

We’re looking for curious, driven, and forward-thinking master’s students with a genuine interest in data science. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about solving real-world problems, eager to explore new technologies, and capable of inspiring others through their innovative mindset. To qualify for this thesis role you should also:

* Be a master student in any of the following fields or related disciplines Artificial Intelligence
* Computer Science
* Data Science
* Machine Learning
* Physics

* Have knowledge of machine learning algorithms and big data
* Have Some programming proficiency

- Collaborate with Data Scientists to productionise features and model outputs, ensuring repeatable, automated data refresh and monitoring.
- Tune performance, capacity and cost of data workloads; propose partitioning, indexing and caching strategies that keep SLAs intact 24/7.
- Set up observability (logs, metrics, alerts) with Azure Monitor and Power BI dashboards to achieve rapid incident response and root-cause analysis.
- Promote best-in-class DevOps IaC, Azure DevOps for CI/CD, automated unit & integration tests for every pipeline.
- Mentor other engineers, run code reviews, and contribute to internal standards and shared dbt packages.

What you will experience

You will have the opportunity to work on forward-looking projects and collaborate with a talented and growing team passionate about developing and implementing new products across our networks.

We believe a hybrid solution between the office and working remotely will create the best environment for us to be creative, productive and find a work-life balance creating magic today and tomorrow.

Regardless of your role, welcoming, caring, and reliable guide you in your everyday work and the challenges you face. We believe you are a people-oriented individual who excels in collaboration and communication with everyone you meet. You are a self-starter who enjoys sharing new ideas and ways of working.

You approach problems with a sharp analytical mindset, capable of translating complex business needs into efficient, maintainable data models and pipelines. With excellent communication skills, you thrive in cross-functional environments and enjoy collaborating across teams and time zones to deliver smart, data-driven solutions.

Qualifications:
- A university degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field, with several years of hands-on experience designing and building scalable data platforms in the Microsoft Azure ecosystem.
- Deep expertise in dbt, including model development, testing, and macros; fluency in Azure Data Factory, particularly with mapping and wrangling data flows; strong command of and/or Python for complex data transformations.
- Proven track record working with Dremio or equivalent lakehouse query engines (e.g., Presto/Trino, Azure Synapse Serverless), including performance optimization at scale.
- Strong understanding of event-driven architectures and messaging patterns using technologies like Azure Service Bus or Apache Kafka.

- Experience in the shipping or logistics industry is a bonus—but not required. Your curiosity and drive to learn are what matter most.
